New Canaan Police Commission approves invoices, closes FY26 budget report
Other Committee · Meeting of July 15, 2026
New Canaan Police Commission closes fiscal 2026 books 1.4 percent over budget. The police chief told commissioners the department finished the year at 101.4 percent of its approved budget, citing late-finalized contractual wage increases. Stolen vehicle reports nearly doubled, with 15 recorded year to date versus eight last year, driven largely by keys left in parked cars, including two incidents in the week before the meeting; the chief said "please don't leave your keys in your car." Staffing sat at 78.8 percent of minimum shift levels last month amid summer vacations and open positions, though a department recruit in the police academy, identified only as Celia, is ranked second in her class ahead of an October graduation.
The commission approved minutes with one name correction and a package of uniform and equipment invoices, both on unanimous voice votes, and expects hiring candidates by its September meeting.
