New Canaan housing panel approves minutes, hears early site survey data
Other Committee · Meeting of June 8, 2026
New Canaan affordable housing panel finds early public support tilting toward Lumberyard site. Chris Wilson told the committee June 8 that a townwide survey, open through June 23, shows 56 percent of respondents favor building on the Lumberyard property versus 16 percent who want no new affordable units at all. The panel also flagged a coming "tipping point" on converting Riverwood units to affordable housing, estimated at "probably 40 or 50 percent" of units, beyond which market-rate performance there would suffer.
Members approved the May 11 minutes unanimously and discussed pairing any Lumberyard project with broader corridor planning tied to the recently approved Weed and Elm development. The committee's contract with architecture firm Amenta Emma needs renewal before it expires at the end of the fiscal year in June.
