New Caanan panel grants conditional approval to historic home rebuild

Other Committee · Meeting of July 23, 2026

New Canaan design review committee conditionally approves a historic home's full rebuild, pending porch and window revisions. The committee asked the project team to deepen a shortened front porch return to roughly 3 feet, calling the house "the only plain and simple structure we have in the neighborhood," and to eliminate proposed glass sidelights at the front door. Members also required real wood for the rebuilt porch railing and pushed the team to reduce a proposed three-window dormer grouping to two larger windows to preserve the house's historic proportions on a side elevation visible from a public roadway near Town Hall.

The contractor said foundation work could begin as early as September 1, with the finished house used as a rental rather than sold. The team plans to seek state or federal historic rehabilitation funding and will return with revised drawings for final sign-off once the committee resumes meeting in September.
