Greenwich P&Z Approves Redesigned Dorothy Hamill Rink, Denies King Street Addition
Planning and Zoning · Meeting of March 17, 2026
Greenwich P&Z advances a redesigned Dorothy Hamill Rink over Byram opposition, denies a King Street addition. The Planning and Zoning Commission voted 5-0 Tuesday to approve a Department of Public Works municipal improvement to relocate the rink and baseball field inside Eugene Morlot Memorial Park, then 5-0 again to send the preliminary site plan to final design. The plan involves 11,500 cubic yards of fill, up to 35 tree removals and a roughly six-percent cut to the park's green space.
Tree Conservancy director Kevitz called the application "incomplete and prematurely advanced"; skating instructor Sarah Gleason said "locker rooms are not a luxury, they are a necessity." The commission separately voted 5-0 to deny, without prejudice, a two-and-a-half-story addition at 1139 King Street after an initial 3-2 vote on setback waivers. Chair Margarita Alban said the commission "made a deal" on the property's scope years ago and "we've not changed that deal on you."
