Charter panel debates electing more New Canaan boards

Other Committee · Meeting of January 7, 2026

New Canaan charter panel debates electing more town boards. Group One of the Charter Revision Commission, chaired by Angela Jameson, spent Wednesday's special meeting weighing whether appointed boards like the Board of Finance should instead be elected. Town Treasurer Brooks said being independently elected let him refuse to sign improperly authorized checks years ago "without fear of retaliation." One commissioner called the accountability argument a "red herring," noting appointed officials already answer to the elected Board of Selectmen and Town Council.

The group also began reviewing Article One, debating and then shelving proposed artificial-intelligence guardrail language as premature, and discussing new protections for the town seal modeled on Southington's charter. Staff member Christina Ross told members Connecticut may soon let towns publish legal notices online instead of in print. No votes were taken on charter language.
